45 - Prunier Hybride - Prunus

Chum Mustang Prunus Prunus x Jefchum - Selected by Dr. Wilbert Ronald and Mr. Rick Durand of Jeffries Nurseries Ltd- The very same plant which we use as a super hardy rootstock for grafting plums, etc. Interestingly enough, this complex prunus hybrid is closely related to most of the Chum family. Deep purple 2.5 cm fruit with juicy, dark red flesh makes great pies and preserves. 421
https://www.whiffletreefarmandnursery.ca/product/chum-mustang-own-root-1-1-5m-3-5/ - Jeffries Nurseries Ltd. has been working for 20 years on a clonal rootstock that would be compatible with Prunus selections including fruiting plums, ornamental plums, apricots and possibly peach. Hybrid seedlings of cherry-plum (complex salicina/americana/besseyi) were evaluated for root anchorage, suckering of root and crown, propagation ease from hardwood/softwood cuttings and wide compatibility. ‘Mustang’ is a complex Prunus hybrid with demonstrated potential for wide use as a clonal understock. It has proven effective for budding various Prunus cultivars (both fruiting and ornamental types) through- out North America. It is bud compatible with P. armeniaca (Apricot), P. salicina (Japanese Plum), P. Americana (American Plum), P. persica (Peach) and possibly other related stocks including Thundercloud. 422
Mustang Rootsock, Jeffries Nursery, 2006 - Mustang Plum-Apricot will grow to be about 20 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 20 feet. It has a low canopy with a typical clearance of 3 feet from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 50 years or more. This variety requires a different selection of the same species growing nearby in order to set fruit.
This tree is typically grown in a designated area of the yard because of its mature size and spread. It should only be grown in full sunlight. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. This particular variety is an interspecific hybrid. 423
http://www.qscaping.com/20000147/Plant/20366/Mustang_Plum-Apricot - Mustang™ has been successfully rooted from 18” hardwood cuttings using bottom heat for callus development followed by field planting under moist west coast conditions. Propagation has also been successful from summer softwood cuttings. Spring planted, rooted softwood cuttings have attained budding size by July. Certified Virus Indexed stock is available in tissue culture. 424
Mustang Rootsock, Jeffries Nursery, 2006 - Semi-dwarf rootstock. 425

Chum, prunier-cerise (besseyi x americana) Prunus besseyi x americana- These tough, resilient, shrubby trees derive much of their hardiness from the sandcherry (Prunus besseyi) side of the family. Crossing sandcherry with native wild plums (Prunis americana) and in some cases with Japanese plums (Prunus salicina) beefed up the fruit with sweet flesh. The result was a fairly wide range of varieties known as cherry-plums or simply chums. Chums are very disease resistant, drought tolerant and precocious (start bearing at an early age). They make a fine ornamental too, especially in spring with arching branches covered in blossoms. While all chum fruits have astringent skin, we have selected varieties where the least of this trait comes through. 139

https://poirespetitsag.wordpress.com/2017/04/22/le-prunier-nain-des-sables-ou-prunus-besseyi/ - Hardy, sprawling native shrub with leathery, grey-green foliage with a blanket of beautiful, single white blooms in spring and purple-black edible fruit in late summer. Fruit is slightly sweet and flavorful great for preserves and is primarily used as a plum pollinator. Tolerates hot, dry areas. Prefers well-drained soil.
Western Sand Cherry is a small shrub with grayish-green leaves that turn purple in fall. They have a mass of small white flowers along the branches in spring and then are proceeded by large quantities of 1/2" purple-black sweet fruits in summer. These fruits are edible and are used in baking pies or homemade jellies. 58
https://www.mckaynursery.com/western-sand-cherry - Sand cherry is a suckering, spreading, deciduous shrub, 4-6 ft. high and wide. Its gray-green leaves provide a different foliage color than most Prunus species. Pure white, 1/2 in. diameter flowers give way to sweet, purplish-black fruits in July and Aug. 59
https://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=PRPUB - Prunus besseyi, western sandcherry, is a sprawly shrub that spreads by rhyzomes. The fruit is purple/black with green flesh, on medium length (10 to 15 mm) fruit stems and between 15 and 20 mm in diameter with improved clones bearing fruit up to 25 mm in diameter.
The fruit is usually very astringent with improved clones somewhat less so. This species blooms profusely at a young age and can bear very heavy crops. Since Prunus besseyi is not self-fruitful, two or more seedlings are needed for cross-pollination and good fruit set. 208
